The South Osborne Permaculture Commons is a network of community garden spaces and food-related sustainability programs in Winnipeg’s Lord Roberts and Riverview neighbourhoods. Their ‘eco-preneur’ urban farmers grow fresh, local, chemical-free produce in various neighbourhood gardens around South Osborne. Members of the public are invited to share in the growing and share the bounty of the gardens.
Every summer the South Osborne Permaculture Commons holds a two week summer institute course offered through the University of Manitoba (SOC 3460). Students learn how to start a community-based urban agriculture project – from planning, design, getting funding, promoting, building and maintaining an urban agriculture commons. While the course takes places at the Riverview Community Centre in Winnipeg, one day is spent at the Harvest Moon Learning Centre in Clearwater.
